Informatik-Kolloquium: Multi-Camera Image Stitching for Video Sensor Networks

We cordially invite to the Informatik-Kolloquium speech of Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Effelsberg on July 10, 2008, 17:00 in Sternwarte, Geismarlandstr. 11.

Multi-Camera Image Stitching for Video Sensor Networks
Speaker: Wolfgang Effelsberg, University of Mannheim

Abstract: Video sensor networks with multiple cameras allow to record a scene from different perspectives at the same time. Often, it is desirable to stitch different camera images together to obtain a unified view. We propose an algorithm that allows to stitch views with different centers of projection together into a single panoramic image. A common trajectory is defined in two source images to be merged. Two convex combinations of a warped and a canonic coordinate are applied so that both source images fit together. Applications are manifold, including video surveillance and tracking of objects with multiple static cameras.

Short biography of Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Effelsberg:
Prof. Effelsberg received his Diploma in electrical engineering in 1976 and his Dr.-Ing. degree in computer science in 1981 from the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany. From 1981-1984 he worked in the United States. He was an Assistant Professor at the University of Arizona in Tucson, then a Post-Doctoral Fellow at IBM Research in San Jose, California. In 1984 he returned to Germany where he joined IBM's newly founded European Networking Center in Heidelberg. From 1984-1989 he led a research group working on the design and implementation of Communication protocols and applications for the emerging OSI networks. In 1989 he joined the University of Mannheim as a full professor of computer science where he is teaching computer networks and multimedia technology since.

He is the co-author of a book on multimedia communications, a book on video compression techniques, editor/co-editor of five other books, and he has published a number of papers in national and international journals and conferences. He acts as a member of the editorial board of Springer/ACM Multimedia Systems and Kluwer Multimedia Tools and Applications, and he serves on the program committee for the IEEE and SPIE multimedia conferences and many other national and international conferences. Prof. Effelsberg is a member of ACM, IEEE and Gesellschaft für Informatik.
