Colloquium talk: Innovative Security Mechanisms for Distributed Systems
Invited speakers: Dr. Matthias Hollick, André König (TU Darmstadt)
Time: 23.01.2009, 10:15-12:00
Room: ZHG 103
Abstract:
Mobile ad hoc networks as well as peer-to-peer systems have attracted
remarkable attention in the research community in recent years.
Fashioned from whatever devices are immediately available, the
self-organizing nature of ad hoc networks promises spontaneous
communication in absence of infrastructure; however, the fact that ad
hoc networks are not yet deployed at large indicates that they are not
ready for prime time. Peer-to-peer systems in contrast have been
extremely successful for quite a number of applications, despite the
fact that they share a number of characteristics with ad hoc networks
that appear to have hindered the success of the latter. From the
perspective of security, both types of networks have in common that they
do not exhibit the well-defined borders of contemporary network
technologies. Moreover, both paradigms build on the cooperation of
distributed nodes.
We introduce (1) various research challenges in the area of distributed
systems with particular emphasis on the effects of node misbehavior in
mobile ad hoc networks. We (2) discuss solutions to mitigate the effects
of node misbehavior including an approach towards geographically secure
ad hoc routing as well as the secure combination of mobile ad hoc
networks with peer-to-peer systems.
Bio André König:
André König received a diploma in computer science from TU Darmstadt.
After having worked for a system retailer offering network design,
consultation, and trainings, he joined the Multimedia Communications Lab
(KOM) at TU Darmstadt in 2005. His research focuses on security
mechanisms for deployment in highly dynamic, decentralized environments
such as mobile ad hoc networks and peer-to-peer systems. Until 2007,
André König contributed to the SicAri project which was funded by the
german ministry for education and research (BMBF) with the goal to
develop a toolkit for secure ubiquitous communications. After SicAri, he
was involved in the SoKNOS project funded by the BMBF to offer a service
oriented communication platform for emergency response scenarios. Since
October 2008, he is engaged in the G-Lab project of the BMBF with the
goal is to establish a nation-wide experimental platform for research
regarding future internet technologies. Besides his PhD thesis and
research projects, André König is involved in various teaching
activities at the Multimedia Communications Lab.
Bio Matthias Hollick:
Dr. Matthias Hollick is the head of the Mobile Networking and the
Ubiquitous Communications groups at the Multimedia Communications Lab
(KOM) of Technische Universität Darmstadt, Germany. His research
interests are in the area of dependability, security, and quality of
service provisioning in communication networks. In particular, the focus
of his current work is on self-organizing mechanisms to enable
dependable and quality-of-service-aware communication in mobile/wireless
ad hoc, mesh, and sensor networks. His research has been supported by
research grants from Siemens AG Corporate Technology, DoCoMo Eurolabs,
and various public research bodies.
Dr. Hollick received his Diploma degree in 1998 and his Doctoral degree
in 2004 from the Technische Universität Darmstadt. Dr. Hollick is member
of the ACM and IEEE and serves in various program committees and
editorial boards related to his research area. He is teaching various
courses in the domain of wireless/mobile communications at TU Darmstadt
and at partner universities. Amongst other activities he acts as an
expert for the European Commission and reviewer for the German National
Science Foundation. For his research, in 2005, Dr. Hollick has received
the award of the Adolf-Messer Foundation.
